I couldn't stop it, my hands were occupied - I was sitting criss cross on a pillow on the floor and my phone somewhere in front of me under my laptop stand so I went for the home button with my big toe but the phone wasn't oriented as I expected it to be so I just started violently smashing it with my foot. This time as well as the last time when I got a notification that Tor needed to update and restart it disappeared completely from my computer. I had to redownload and do a fresh install. I think there is a bug somewhere.

Wow, Torproject, did you (and related community projects) really manage to make this into an entirely male panel? Meh.

I think the popularity and increased use of VPNs has possibly hit the number of people using Tor. The good news is that some companies are starting to crack down on these. Deep packet inspection, banning blocks of IP addresses etc will make it possible to clamp down on VPN connections. Also, unless people use incognito mode, they won’t be very anonymous. Tor does rely on a lot of people using it who are willing to be a node on the system, ideally an exit node. The fact that Tor used to be harder to connect to years ago will potentially mean some people who tried it then, not realising it’s now really simple. VPNs sponsor a lot of RUclips videos but as far as I know, Tor doesn’t advertise at all.

I watched your Tor Postbox launch live yesterday. I applaud your principles with all my heart. Thank you for inviting me. I am very sorry that you didn't have a much bigger audience. However, at the centre of any project, mission or campaign is the ability to communicate it to others. Cecilia highlights the problem if she is suggesting that most of her target audience has Swahili as their first language. Mahsa is suggesting that freedom of speech and the privacy of the individual needs to be protected in Iran for example, where very few speak english. So, is the english language itself at the heart of the problem. For good or ill, and with dubious thanks to the US and microsoft it looks like some sort of english will become the universal lingua franca. I am not at all convinced that AI driven Babelbots are the answer to the incredible sophistication of real communication between real people.
